German Ambassador to Nigeria to Deliver Keynote Address at EMCR’s World Cancer Day “The Big Walk”

Equitable Medicaid and Clinical Research (EMCR) had the honour of meeting with Her Excellency Annett Günther, German Ambassador to Nigeria, ahead of the World Cancer Day awareness campaign, “The Big Walk,” scheduled for February 4, 2026, in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs.

The meeting provided an opportunity for meaningful discussions on cancer awareness, prevention, early detection, and the importance of bringing communities together to support people affected by the disease.

Ambassador Günther is expected to deliver the keynote address at the event, while members of the German Embassy team will also participate in the awareness walk, joining healthcare professionals, advocates, cancer survivors, and members of the public in raising awareness about cancer.

With the theme “Cancer No Be King,” The Big Walk seeks to encourage open conversations about cancer, challenge the fear and stigma surrounding the disease, and remind Nigerians that early detection and timely medical care can save lives.

For many families in Nigeria, a cancer diagnosis brings not only fear and uncertainty but also the financial burden of seeking medical care. Some patients face delays in diagnosis, while others struggle to access treatment because of poverty, distance, or limited healthcare services.

Through this campaign, EMCR hopes to encourage more people to take their health seriously, recognise early warning signs, seek medical advice, and support individuals and families living with cancer.

The participation of the German Ambassador and the Embassy team, alongside the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, reflects the shared interest in raising public awareness and encouraging community participation in the fight against cancer.

EMCR expressed its sincere appreciation to Ambassador Günther for the warm reception, thoughtful discussions, and willingness to participate in the campaign.

As preparations continue, EMCR invites government institutions, diplomatic missions, civil society organisations, healthcare professionals, cancer survivors, students, and members of the public to participate in The Big Walk.

Cancer No Be King. No one should face cancer alone, and every life deserves a fighting chance.
