Equitable Medicaid and Clinical Research marked the 2025 16 Days of Activism with a community volleyball match designed to “spike out” digital violence against women and girls. This event brought together community members, students, and local leaders to raise awareness about the growing problem of online abuse targeting women.
Digital violence against women and girls takes many forms, including harassment, cyberstalking, non-consensual sharing of intimate images, and gendered disinformation. Women are disproportionately affected due to existing social inequalities and power imbalances, which make them more vulnerable to online attacks. The consequences of such abuse are far-reaching. It can cause severe psychological harm, restrict women’s participation in public and professional life, and undermine broader efforts toward gender equality and a fair society.
By framing the campaign around a volleyball match, the initiative used sports as a platform to engage participants in meaningful conversations about online safety, respect, and accountability. The interactive approach encouraged attendees to reflect on the digital spaces they navigate and the role everyone plays in challenging abusive behavior. Participants also learned practical steps to prevent and respond to cyber violence, promoting a culture of vigilance and solidarity within the community.
Through this creative intervention, Equitable Medicaid and Clinical Research highlighted the importance of addressing digital violence as part of the larger fight for women’s rights and equality. The activity not only raised awareness but also empowered women and men alike to take active steps in reducing online abuse. By combining education with community engagement, the program reinforced the message that digital spaces should be safe, inclusive, and free from violence for everyone.
