En Nigeria, acceder a la atenci\u00f3n sanitaria b\u00e1sica no deber\u00eda ser un privilegio, pero para muchos es un sue\u00f1o imposible. Hemos sido testigos directos de esta lucha: las largas esperas, la falta de recursos, las decisiones desesperadas que la gente se ve obligada a tomar. El coste de la desigualdad sanitaria no es s\u00f3lo econ\u00f3mico; se paga en vidas que se pierden demasiado pronto, en familias destrozadas por enfermedades prevenibles. Esta realidad despert\u00f3 en nosotros la determinaci\u00f3n de cambiar las cosas.<\/p>

Fundamos Equitable Medicaid and Clinical Research Ltd\/Gte porque no pod\u00edamos quedarnos de brazos cruzados mientras tantas personas de nuestras comunidades sufr\u00edan. Sab\u00edamos que si no actu\u00e1bamos, el ciclo de abandono continuar\u00eda. Enfermedades que podr\u00edan tratarse se estaban dejando pudrir porque la investigaci\u00f3n y los ensayos cl\u00ednicos avanzados eran casi inexistentes en nuestro pa\u00eds. Vimos c\u00f3mo personas reales -con esperanzas, sue\u00f1os y seres queridos- se convert\u00edan en estad\u00edsticas, con sus vidas truncadas porque no pod\u00edan acceder a la atenci\u00f3n que necesitaban.<\/p>

En las zonas rurales y los suburbios urbanos, donde la vida cotidiana ya es una lucha, las crisis sanitarias golpean con mayor dureza. Enfermedades prevenibles se cobran vidas silenciosamente, y la medicina tradicional, que tiene un gran valor en nuestra cultura, a veces hace m\u00e1s mal que bien sin las pruebas cl\u00ednicas adecuadas. Para las mujeres y las j\u00f3venes, lo que est\u00e1 en juego es a\u00fan mayor. La mortalidad materna es una tr\u00e1gica realidad, agravada por la falta de educaci\u00f3n y recursos en torno a la salud sexual y reproductiva. Los matrimonios precoces, los embarazos no deseados y la propagaci\u00f3n de enfermedades no son s\u00f3lo problemas: son crisis a las que nuestras madres, hermanas e hijas se enfrentan cada d\u00eda. La anticuada dependencia del sistema de los registros en papel s\u00f3lo dificulta la prestaci\u00f3n de una atenci\u00f3n que podr\u00eda salvar vidas.<\/p>

A menudo se olvida tambi\u00e9n a los ancianos, a los que se deja afrontar sus \u00faltimos a\u00f1os sin apenas apoyo. Se ignora la salud mental y se deja de lado a los que sufren, tachando su dolor de superstici\u00f3n. Los vemos, vagando por las calles, perdidos en sus luchas, y sabemos que este estigma debe acabar.<\/p>

Por eso fundamos Equitable Medicaid and Clinical Research. No somos una organizaci\u00f3n m\u00e1s; somos personas que creen que cada vida, por peque\u00f1a o marginada que sea, importa. Nos centramos en las personas que se han quedado atr\u00e1s, llevando la asistencia sanitaria a quienes m\u00e1s la necesitan.
