World Tuberculosis (TB) Day Awareness

World Tuberculosis (TB) Day Awareness

The project

About this work

Equitable Medicaid and Clinical Research (EMCR) organized a symbolic 12,000-foot mountain hike to commemorate World Tuberculosis (TB) Day, bringing together more than 100 participants to raise public awareness about tuberculosis, promote early diagnosis and treatment, and encourage community support for people affected by the disease. The awareness event brought together students from Baze University, volunteers, representatives of government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and members of the public. The mountain hike served as a symbolic representation of the difficulties faced by people living with tuberculosis, including delayed diagnosis, limited access to healthcare, financial hardship, and discrimination. A central message of the campaign focused on the risk of TB transmission and the importance of early treatment. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a person with untreated pulmonary tuberculosis can infect approximately 10 to 15 people through close contact within one year. The campaign used this information to encourage early testing, prompt treatment, and greater public understanding of the disease. The event also drew attention to the challenges affecting tuberculosis prevention and treatment in Nigeria. Limited public awareness, inadequate funding, gaps in healthcare services, and poorly equipped health facilities continue to affect efforts to control the disease. These challenges can delay diagnosis and treatment, leaving affected individuals and their families at greater risk. Through the mountain hike, EMCR promoted public discussion about tuberculosis and the need to eliminate discrimination against people living with the disease. Participants were encouraged to share accurate information about TB, support affected families, and advocate for improved access to prevention, diagnosis, and treatment services. The participation of more than 100 individuals from educational institutions, government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and the wider community demonstrated public interest in tuberculosis awareness and prevention. The event also provided an opportunity to draw attention to the need for continued investment in TB control and stronger community participation in public health activities. The activity was supported through contributions from donors, volunteers, participating institutions, and community members. EMCR continues to advocate for increased public awareness, early detection, accessible treatment, and improved healthcare services for people affected by tuberculosis in Nigeria. The World Tuberculosis Day mountain hike formed part of the organization's public health education and disease prevention activities. Yes! We Can End TB.
