Community to Benefit from Solar-Powered Borehole Restoration Project in Ogodo, Kogi State

Ogodo, a community in Ankpa Local Government Area (LGA) of Kogi State, is set to experience a significant improvement in water access as efforts are underway to restore three non-functional boreholes. The initiative, led by Equitable Medicaid and Clinical Research Ltd/Gte, aims to replace the failed diesel generators that previously powered the boreholes with eco-friendly solar-powered systems.

The $30,000 project will address the community’s longstanding water crisis, which has left over 3,500 residents dependent on unsafe water sources. This challenge has resulted in widespread waterborne diseases and added significant hardship, particularly for women and children who must travel long distances in search of water.

Tackling Water Scarcity with Sustainability

The project takes a sustainable approach by integrating solar energy into the borehole systems. Solar-powered pumps will be installed to extract water efficiently, while additional rubber tanks will be provided to improve storage capacity. The intervention also includes re-drilling the boreholes to remove debris and replacing damaged pipes to restore full functionality.

Speaking on the initiative, Kadiri, Ugbede-Ojo Dominic a representative of the organization noted, “This project goes beyond just fixing boreholes. It’s about providing a lasting solution that ensures the people of Ogodo have reliable access to clean water without the recurring costs and environmental impact of fossil fuels.”

A New Chapter for Ogodo

Residents are optimistic about the project’s potential to transform their lives. Clean water will reduce cases of waterborne diseases, saving families from frequent medical expenses. Women and children, who bear the brunt of fetching water, will have more time for education and productive activities, ultimately improving their quality of life.

Long-Term Impact and Sustainability

The initiative’s design prioritizes long-term benefits. Community members will receive training on basic maintenance, while a local technician will provide support for more technical issues. To ensure sustainability, a small water usage fee will be collected and reinvested into maintaining the boreholes.

By embracing solar energy, the project aligns with global efforts to reduce carbon emissions and promote renewable energy solutions. For Ogodo, this marks the beginning of a brighter and healthier future.

Call to Action

Equitable Medicaid and Clinical Research Ltd/Gte is calling on individuals and organizations to support this project, which promises to improve public health, reduce environmental impact, and uplift the community. With a funding goal of $30,000, this initiative is on track to deliver long-lasting change for the people of Ogodo.
